Historic Tour
November 26, 2016 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
The Skyway Marina District St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church approaches its 130th anniversary and opens its doors to history buffs and the local community.
St. Bartholomew’s first sanctuary was constructed in 1887 and is still in use today, making it the oldest church in continual operation in Pinellas County. To kick-off the celebration of its 130th anniversary in April, 2017, the church will host a History Tour on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 11am.
Jerry Knight, a 50-year church member and local historian, will lead the tour. The hour-long tour begins inside the sanctuary, where Mr. Knight will walk participants through the historic structure, including the original and expanded portions of the sanctuary, the other church buildings, and the surrounding gardens. Jerry will recount the physical move of the church to its present location in the late 1960’s, construction of the stained glass windows, and contributions of some of the older furnishings. The tour concludes with a walk in the Memorial Gardens, and refreshments in the Parish Hall.
“We are excited to open our church home to the community to explore Pinellas history right here in the Skyway Marina District”, says rector, The Reverend William V. Burkett. “St. Bartholomew’s embraces the theme – God is Love; Love is Here; All are Welcome, and we look forward to welcoming you to our year-long 130th anniversary celebration”.
There is no charge for the history tour, but participation is limited. To make reservations, to learn more about the history tour, or to arrange an interview with Jerry Knight, call the Church Office at 727-867-7015 or email stbarts@verizon.net before Thanksgiving. Future tours will be offered on a regular basis and announced as soon as they are scheduled.
